Happy Birthday, I was first introduced to your books by a Swiss fellow who was using them to teach himself English and fell in love with them. That was in 1981. Since then, my wife and I have enjoyed all of your works. We sincerely hope you have a happy 81'st birthday.

I thank the Lord for the talent He has given you to write. I am so entertained by your books, and can happily read yours just before reading my Bible at my bedtime. Not many authors are that way. I am also looking forward to reading them again as soon as I get through your entire set. Thank you Dick Francis, and thank the Lord for you and your beloved wife who was with you for so many years. God bless !!!

You have here in Finland one of your most ardent admirers. Yes, we have here only trotters in races if you do not count show jumping a few times a year. Still...it must be about 25 years now that I first read your thrillers and was at once addicted to your sparsely elegant style and to the special and different world of jockeys and trainers. You have delighted me over and over, as I have found that your books can be read many times and still they keep as fresh and fascinating as reading them for the first time. So I wish a very very happy birthday to you and a happy time to all your family.

It may seem silly, but in 1995, your new release, Come To Grief, was what got me through my first operation - I had it sitting on my bed table at home and it gave me something to look forward to when the operation was over. My introduction to your stories came when my husband (now of 35 years - 9/2/02) gave me several of your paperback books for Christmas, resulting in my first trip to England with my sister-in-law, a year in Brussels with my company and several trips since; otherwise, we would have stayed put for the rest of our lives. Thank you. You are the age of my step father (81 on June 10, 2002) and he is the most intersting person I know). I've missed your books - keep looking - but only just read about the death of your wife. It's been awhile, but my sincere condolences. I hope you can write something again - soon. Your protagonists are reflections of you, I'm sure. Happy Birthday. Thank you for making our time on earth a little happier. Daly

Happy 82nd Birthday Sir! Having read all but "A Jockey's Life", we decided that on our first trip across the pond, we would seek out any horse race that would give us a feel for English horse racing as described in your books. In the rain, we stood on the rail in York, after wagering 2 pounds on the #2 horse. As they thundered by, mud flying, #2 finished first. Great Fun! Thank you & God Bless

I read one of your books on the recommendation of a friend and now I am attempting to find and read all of them. I appreciate the subtle humor, cleverly designed sentence structure and the mysteries involving so many different horse related activities. I like the way you keep your writing free of extensive descriptions of graphic violence or sex, and minimal offensive language. I am a person that likes to read books where good is victorious over evil and that is another reason I like your books. I almost feel like I know you because I look at your picture on the back cover after completing each paperback. You are an excellent writer! Keep your books coming, please. Have a great birthday! In my opinion, people in their 80's are a very special group. I often tell my patients that I should wear a button on my lab jacket that says " I cater to people in their 80's. I don't know if any of your books have the hero as an elderly gentleman but that would be pleasing to many of us who specialize in aging. Thank you so much. As I reread my note to you I feel that I am an inadequate writer but I am grateful for the chance to be able to wish you a happy birthday.

My very best wishes for your having a most Happy Birthday, Mr. Francis! I heard Sir Kingsley Amis once remark that he read your books with great pleasure, astounded by the "good sense" that prevails in them. After hearing that, I became quite an avid fan of your books, too, reading each as soon as I picked it up. Amis was right -- and more. You are a gifted stylist, and the most interesting storyteller of the century. Thank you for the pleasures of your books!

Dear Mr. Francis, I'm a doctoral student at Boston University and am writing on the liturgical arts. I've also been active in music, dance and drama as a performer and instructor. I get to France fairly often to do research for my dissertation on a 14th c. Ms there, in Sens. I've enjoyed your work and the characters you've created. I usually read a book in a single sitting and then re-re-read it in bits and pieces several times over, if it stands up to that scrutiny. There are usually at least two of yours upside down around the bed at any one time... I'll be going to England in a couple of weeks with a friend and have decided as a result of reading your work that I have to go to Stratford racecourse...I'm not usually a fan of races, or a visitor to racetracks, but I realized from reading your work that I might enjoy a visit! I've also been emailing a fellow I met on the trains here about six weeks ago. The conversation started because someone asked about who had won the Belmont stakes that day, and I replied that I didn't know but I should, because I'd been reading about racing recently...We're "just friends" at the moment, and it's hard to know where things might go, but at least you should know that the connection was made as a result of your books!!! I hope your day goes well...Many happy returns... Best--Donna La Rue, Ph.D. Candidate, "The Arts for Then and Now," Boston University Professors' Program "Dance and Sens Cathedral: Did They or Didn't They?"

Happy Birthday, Mr Francis. I have enjoyed all your books for many years now. I new absolutely nothing about race horses or steeple chase etc when I started reading your books. But after reading all of them, I keep rereading them over and over again whenever I need some excitement and dry English humoristic dialogues. They simply make me feel better! Dear Dick Francis, My family (also avid readers of your books) and I would like to wish you a happy and healthy birthday in 2002! My little granddaughter Lydia was born on October 31 last year and I know she will be most proud to share that birthday with you when she is old enough to read. Oddly enough, my uncle and grandmother were also born on October 31. I know you had a rather sad birhtday last year. I hope the sun has begun to shine for you a bit now.

Happy Birthday Mr. Francis and many happy returns! I am now reading Forfeit. It's the second book by you that I read. When some people see it they say, "oh that's the guy who writes about horse races, I never know what he's talking about". I don't either but you sure make reading about the world of horse races, jockeys and the accompanying intrigues very interesting! I hope to read more in the future. Thank you for the entertainment.

Happy Birthday and for goodness's sake, when is your next book coming out? Do you know anything about stadium jumping in the US? I've anecedotal stories about horses facing all sorts of cruel perils in the effort to make them jump cleanly. (acid burns on forelegs, nails hammered into the top bar of practice jumps). The best way to heal is to keep busy, so get writing!

Over the past twenty years, your books, anticipated and and then reread frequently, have reminded me in bad times that decency will prevail and in other times that a really good story never gets stale. I have been astonished and delighted in the work ethic that could produce a new hero (almost every time) in a new and interesting (and well researched) environment. I have a complete collection of your works, mostly in hardcover, with which I have recruited many readers. This is the second fan letter I've ever written; the first was to Huntley/Brinkley, the news team, after they covered their first political convention in the fifies. I hope that you find that good company! Thank you for all the many hours I've enjoyed reading and rereading your books.

All the best to you on your birthday and everyday. I have been reading your books, and every one of them, for many years. They have given me great pleasure, and I look forward to each one, savoring them as I go like fine chocolate. Your attention to detail in your research for each setting is wondeRful. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions in the early one in Russia, and the one with the chefs kitchen on the train. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DICK!

Putting words together here is a daunting task considering the delicious expertise with which you do in all you write. Your works have given me a tremendous amount of pleasure by the way they let the story slip by with ease, a thankful wonderment in how you relinquish information beyond the average individuals knowledge and a desire to read your next work immediately after finishing the latest published. I have read and reread each of your novels and never fail to find something new that my eyes and mind missed during the previous readings. I wish you a happy birthday and thank you for all the pleasure you have provided to me.

We are now in the prosess of re-reading all your books...our local library (Alamogordo) has a veritable treasure-trove of your works in paperback. Years ago I read all of your books for the action and suspence..now I treasure them for the charactor studies, and espesially the message that shines thru of honor and integrety sorely missed in this age. Thank you more that I can say...I know "Sid" could say it so much better!!

Happy Belated Birthday Greetings. I am a native of Woore in Shropshire and I understand you had one of your first rides at Woore Point to Point races. I also met Tim Brookshaw at one of the fences he was inspecting. I am also a relative of Lester Piggott on my mothers side. I wonder if you are related to me? Where was your family from? Kind Regards, David Francis.
