Many happy returns of the day - have a wonderful day ... I loved your last book Shattered - we have a great glass blower who works nearby. I love the sunshine piercing through the coloured glass so have several of his pieces mainly paper weights on my windowsill. I have been looking forward to your next book - will it be soon? I have all your books and just love them. I hope you are going to keep producing these great stories. How about one on New Zealand - plenty of bush, fishing, hunting, boats - maybe to do with the Americas Cup which we have unfortunately just lost ... there was certainly a lot of undercurrents around then. So heres hoping to have another great read. Take care - regards

Dear Mr. Francis, Thank you for writing your wonderful books. I first read one in 1995 when I lived in Reston, Virginia. Immediately I ordered all the rest and read them straight through. Since then I've reread several, some more than once. Just this month I've reordered all I could and am beginning again, this time trying to read them in order of publication. I love the quiet grit and character and ingenuity of your main characters. I also appreciate the way you take up so many different special occupations (photographer, gem merchant, insurance agent, etc.) and topics (the making of scotch whiskey, the history of bagpipes--and Scotland, etc.). I've learned a lot in addition to getting much enjoyment. Thank you, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

You have inspired me as a writer, and I was lucky enough to meet you once at a book signing in Sydney. I hope your birthday is a good one... with fondest regards, Sabrina

Dear Mr. Francis A number of years ago I was in a bad car accident, leaving me in a coma for 3 months. When I came out of that, I was told that I would never walk again. Also my memory had gone, and I could not even read. The rehab nurse suggested I read books with her. The only ones available were by you. I thought to myself oh no, not horse racing! (My father was a bad gambler and a worse drinker, so horse racing meant he was either in a bad mood having lost his money, or a bad mood because he had spent his winnings on drink). However she persevered, and although I had to read the same passage many times before I could remember any of it, it always seemed to be interesting and made my mind work. I recovered better than anyone expected, or even hoped for. I continued to read your books, but gradually dropped off reading due to other commitments (ie working overtime to prevent my house being re-possessed, paying for private therapy etc). Many years later I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The side effects of the treatment and the condition meant many sleepless nights, running to the toilet to be sick. Sitting up in bed for hours is not much fun, so I soon thought to myself, "who can help me get through the night? I know, Dick Francis!". So I either re-read or bought new books of yours. I am on the mend now, but still read most nights. Thank you very much for helping me through some rough times. If there is anything I can do to thank you please let me know. I have now got an interesting job with a great company, so I would not be in such a good position without the therapy and positive attitude that your books have given me in two very bleak periods of my life. So I wish you an early "Happy Birthday", and keep on writing! (Selfish request I know, but I would like to buy your book purely for pleasure purposes from now on. Dont forget, if there is any way I can thank you, let me know, via the e mail address. Kind regards Phil Abbnett

Happy Birthday, Mr. Francis! I have seen your books for years, but having no real interest in horse racing, I ignored them. I sort books for our local "Friends of the Library" group, and one of my cohorts said recently, "you don't have to be a fan of racing to enjoy a Dick Francis story". That was a month ago and since then I have read "Whiphand" and "Straight". I loved them both and am now trying to decide which one of your books to read next. Thank you so much for your stories. And thanks to the renewed interest about Seabiscuit, I have rediscovered my childhood fascination with horses.

Dear Mr. Francis...your books have been and are beyond description! My mother (89) and I (43) have read and re-read them for YEARS. I have learned so much about so many different things and appreciate the meticulous research. Your characterizations and spare descriptions have been matchless. I am not finding myself being able to put into words how much I have enjoyed reading your books. I envy those who have just discovered them. Having read them all at least once and many of them many times I hanker constantly for more books. Not to be, I know, but have wished for a long time that I could find a way to write to you and to thank you for the writing and sharing. You've added a great deal to my life. Dear Mr. Dick Francis, I don't know you personally, but I hope you have a terrific birthday this Halloween. You are one of my favorite writers, and I have always regretted not contacting other favorite writers (like Robertson Davies) before there was no longer any opportunity. I love how you deal with the existence of evil - not gratuitously, just honestly. I can't remember which of your books it was in, but my favorite ending was when the son saw his father's journal and realized that he had been afraid sometimes, too. It was a great ending.

Dear Mr. Francis, Since my Grampa Charlie got me interested in your books way back in 1984 I have wished there were a way to tell you how much I appreciate your work and that I am truly a fan of yours. You have given myself and my Grampa so many wonderful hours of enjoyment. He is gone now but because of him I found you. I never tire of your stories and am working on finishing my collection. Thank you for sharing your wonderful stories with the world and creating so many enjoyable hours of "getaway" excitement. I find it hard to put a book down once I open it up and can re-read them and find them as exciting as the first time. May this coming 83d birthday be a most joyous and memorable time. I wish for you the happiest of days, now and always. Respectfully, Deby Zimmerman

Happy Birthday, Mr. Francis! I will never forget when I was in 8th grade and a school assignment had me write to my favorite author, which was you. I was so thrilled when you so pleasantly wrote me back. That token of kindness was not lost on me as a child. Now, nearing 30, I have made sure to add every one of your books in hardback form to my bookcase, and I delight in loaning them to friends who get to experience your wondeful, intoxicating literature. God bless!

I hope your day is a full of joy as my life is when I read your stories. You are absolutely my favorite author - I have read and re-read your things, and always find something I missed about human behavior you smoothly worked into the story.

Mr. Francis, I wish you a very happy birthday and many more to come. Have enjoyed your books for a long time - have reread them many times and they are just as much fun as the first time. I am missing a couple from my collection but hope to complete it soon. I hope you will have a new one for us in the near future. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Happy Birthday, Dick Francis! May you have many, many more (birthdays and books written.) I have every single one of your books, and am now working on getting all of them in hardcover. Each book seems to be better than the last, which I guess means, you are like a fine wine, getting better with age. Have a wonderful birthday, and a Happy Halloween! :)

Many Happy Birthday Wishes. Thank you for the books which take me back to my "horse years" so vividly. They are my treasures, to which I return time and again like a favourite tune or country walk. I used to live in St Albans, rode a point-to-point mare called Paper Bag,and led up hourses at Friars Wash, so perhaps you were there. I like to think so. Thank you again for becoming a writer and for all the wonderful stories and the real atmosphere of racing.

Happy Birthday, and many happy returns. Your books give me many hours of joy. Honor, integrity, and compassion aren't traits that are celebrated much these days. Thank you for presenting stories that promote these qualities. Again Happy Birthday, and regards to your family.

Happy Birthday to one of the treasures of the literary world. There is nothing better than a Francis novel and a lounge in sunny Maui. I will never part with the autographed book I was fortunate to purchase at Harrods. Thanks for all the hours of entertainment you have given us.

For the many happy hours spent curled up a chair reading your books, I thank you so much. In difficult times I have always known that I could pick up one of your books and escape into a world filled with deeply good people. I sorrowed for your loss. Little consolation that it is, I hope you know how much your writing has sometimes brought ease to others. Best Wishes on your birthday.

Happy Belated Birthday Dick Francis :} I am sorry to hear of the death of Mary Francis. My heartfelt sympathy is with you and your loved ones. The emptiness you feel is irreplaceable, but I can say a prayer for you and your loved ones for comfort and strength. My husband, Mike Francis, loves your books and loves horses!!He calls you "Uncle Dick" We have two horses and love to ride. Ironically 8 years ago my son Chris and all his high school buddies went by fictitious names in high school and his student I.D. card read "Dick Francis". That's when we learned of your books. Hope your birthday brought you blessings!! Mary Francis
