We read quite a lot of DF's books during the eighties. In 1989 I caught a virus that caused some memory loss. In the nineties I have managed to collect most of his books and was able to re-read them, fresh, as it were. decided to keep this lot, for a random read now and again and have ordered my last three, published earlier.

Dick Francis is one of my favorite authors.I had the pleasure of meeting him at a book signing in Columbis,SC and he was just as charming in person as the heros in his books.I eagerly await his yearly offerings and I hope I can talk to him again someday.

The books by Dick Francis are really good. The style of writing puts me right where the action is, so much so I can feel the horses breathing right down my neck! And to think that I have never been on a racecourse or seen a race horse except on TV, in the movies and books.They also have a subtle vein of humor running through them, that I have to take time off and laugh. I hope Dick Francis writes books as fast as I can read them. After reading his books, others fall far short in comparison.

Along with painting pictures, Alexander paints the beautiful and harsh Scottish landscape with words. What a great story. It was my first and, after reading many others, still my favorite.

I love the attitudes of hero in Dick Francis novels. So practical! They do what they have to do - if the consequence is danger, well, in the words of my dear departed mother - "So be it!" Get through it and get over it. Life goes on. I think it's a "horse/animal/nature" sort of thing.

I have been a Dick Francis fan for about 20 years, and wait each year for a new book to be published. I have a wonderful friend in Illinois who always sends me the book as soon as it is published. Much appreciated as I am an American living in Sweden, and not much Dick Francis interest here.

I have been reading Dick Francis since the late 60's and I have never been disappointed! The early books are all papaerbacks (since that's all I could afford!); the last 10 or so are all hard covers! I try to re-read them every year or so, and the message is still fresh in every one!
The two Syd Halley novels From the fist Dick Francis book I read , I was firmly hooked on this author. Hecombines two things I love to read about, horses & mystery. Can't wait till he has a new book out . Please write more Syd Halley books !!

I was very happy to find this great site and know there are other fans like me! Over the years I have collected all his books 1st edition HB - signed. My family makes a yearly pilgrimage to the Washington D.C. area to get the lastest book signed and to take a picture with him. My favorite because he explores some thoughtful adult themes in terms of the personal life of the narrator. Here's a guy who seemingly has the great family life and is successful on his own terms in his chosen profession. Yet the spark has gone out of his marriage and he's got to figure out what to do. I was more interested in the resolution of that situation than I was in the actual mystery.

Although I have many authors that I make sure I read the latest from, DF is one of the few whose books I both buy and keep. Great character development; perfect in the eyes of others, yet modest :) I also enjoy the fact that I can find out little bits of esoteric information, ranging from antiques to wines. I'm sure a lot of research goes into those details.

Banker, Second Wind, and all the rest!!!!! I started reading DF through Readers Digest Condensed Books about 15 years ago. Was first interrested because Francis is my maiden name. I love his writing style and have most of his books in my collection. I started collecting paper backs and am now replacing them all with HB. E-Bay is a good place to find his books.

We lived in Bangor-on Dee, North Wales in the early 50's, so did Dick Francis but he was "only" something like ex-champion jockey, and I believe trainer (those were my youthful days). I now live in southern Germany (Ulm which is between Munich and Stuttgart) and have even managed to convince a couple of Germans of Dick Francis' talents as an author. keep up the good work
Reflex Have all but one of his books - "A Jockey's Life", which I cannot seem to locate. My nephew found "The Sport of Queens" for me on the internet. Second favorite is "Smokescreen" which is the one which got me hooked on his novels. After that it would be impossible to say which were best!!

I have been introduced to Dick Francis'books when I was 15 (...about 20 years ago)by an english friend who lent me Reflex to help me with my english (I am french). Since then I have bought them all and await each year the release in paperback of his last book (as I live in Switzerland it comes in about Christmas). This year I could not wait and bought the last one in hard cover... I love his style, imagination and his description of horses. I wonder why no film has been made on one of his stories... Nice to find other people, who enjoy reading Dick Francis novels. I started reading his books 15 years ago, because I´m a big horse fan. I have most of D.F´s books, friends in England have bought some of them for me, as I prefer reading them in English, instead of Danish translations. "My" first foal is called Dick Turpin, the next will be called......Yes! Dick Francis. Hope he can see the fun of it!

As you can see I have a hard time deciding which book is my favorite! I reread all of them at LEAST once a year,the characters all seem like old friends. I'm a Reader Advisor for an NLS Talking Book Center, and the other employees always kid me about what I advise---"you want a romance;Dick Francis"--"you want a mystery;Dick Francis"--you want an adventure;Dick Francis"--"you want to learn something new;Dick Francis"!!!!! YOU get the idea! It's not far from the truth!!
Please help me if you can. My principal wants me to find the quote, "I'd rather confirm than command" from a Dick Francis book. She thinks it might have been said by the sister of a major character. She does not remember the title of the book, the story or where it takes place. The character made the statement about leadership and might have been named Noel. Every year for the last 10 years for my birthday my mother has brought me a hard back Dick Francis book and I have loved them, and read them all many times with great enjoyment.
When I lived in Wallingford near Oxford and Dick and Mary lived at nearby Blewbury (Penny Chase) I was their Insurance Broker, looked after all the families insurances for many years and knew Dick and Mary well. Mary opened a little shop just round the corner from me. Once I got up in the middle of the night to produce a green card for Merrick, which Dick collected in his sports car, transferred to his plane and flew down to Dover where Merrick was waiting for it. Dick brought in to show me the draft of his first novel (in an exercise book)

"Straight" was the very first book in English which happen to be in my hands eight years ago - by chance! I didn't know any word in English then and had to look in the dicionary for each and every! word. I still remember by heart the beginning of the novel until now. I fell in love with Dick Francis' books forever, and buy in Moscow whatever only I can find. Have a pleasure in reading! Big thanks to Mr. Francis - couldn never find a better teacher!

Dick Francis has a magnificent gift for writing these books. All of which so far have been exactly what I have been looking for. He manages to have a beautifully thought through plot to each and every one of his excellent books. I can't wait to finish the rest of them!!

It's really ridiculous to put down a favorite. They are ALL favorites. I can hardly wait for Fall each year to get the new Dick Francis and then I have to go into seclusion until the book is read....and then I read it again. There was even one which mentioned Santa Anita...I can't remember which but it's our favorite race track since we live right here in Arcadia, CA.

Remember the book about the man with lots of kids that inherited a race track & lived in a converted barn? I thought I had read a sequel to that book but I can't locate it. In this story his wife leaved him, with all the children but comes back after her boyfriend dumps her when she gets pregnent. Is there such a book? Or am I confusing several story lines together? Hi, Sue! The book you're referring to is Decider and there isn't a sequel to it. The only main characters that have been repeated in books are Sid Halley (Odds Against, Whip Hand, Come to Grief) and Kit Fielding (Break In, Bolt).

I've been reading Dick Francis' books for so many years; I think he had ten or less published when I picked up my first one and was immediately hooked. My favorite quote, and I can't remember what book it's from, is the one about horses being a "foreign country that they allow us to visit from time to time." What I love about him the most is that his people really breathe, and you can't help but identify with them and feel what they are going through. Also like the well-researched "fringe" professions of some of his protagonists...the ones who aren't directly involved in horses or racing. The newest book, "Shatter" (Shattered?)is an outstanding example. Did not know that Mary had died..was terribly sorry to read that news. She was so important to his life and work from the beginning.
