i have been resding dick francis since i was thirteen and have read and re-read and own all of the books execpt knock down which i am hunting in hardcover. i am 31 now and have never tired of the books they are like coming home to an old friend every time you open the page.

I started reading DF's books in the late 60's when there were only two available at my Pasadena, CA, USA book shop. Picked up more in Canada on vacation in the early 70's and then in England on 10'th wedding anniversary trip. Have enjoyed them all over and over. Just finished Dead Cert and thought there might be a website so I could get the latest news. Well done! Bob
My Mom, who is blind and spends almost all of her time listening to books on tape, has asked me to post this question. (I am pretty ignorant of Dick Francis books, but am going to correct that faux pas asap), so the question is not intended to offend. Ahem, the question: My Mom has recently listened to a couple of "Dick Francis" books that seem to her to be very different from the earlier ones she enjoyed over the years. Has Mr. Francis changed his style, or, she asks, is she getting stories from some "copy cat" or person with a similar name? I cannot assist her in reviwing the printed book lists, so I cannot ascertain the answer that way. The person who reads the book lists to her is a cleaning lady who is very kind, but doesn't read herself, so we are puzzled. Thanks so much for any response. flo

I love them all - tough to choose one favorite. One of the best things about your first person narratives is the ease and naturalness of flash-backs. It never ceases to amaze me that I've been brought though another one. I look forward to the new bi-annual installments and am completing my hard back collection of all your works.

It is great to find a bunch of people who like him as much as I do. Anybody is welcome to write to me. Have gotten another book group to read Hilt. I don,t remember all the names only the jist of some of the stories.although i have all saved on my bookshelf in hopes my kids will someday appreciate as much as me.sid halley being tied up when the boiler was going to blow.the guy writing the auto biography for the trainer and the boathouse incident. the guy waking up in the dark space tied up which turns out to be a boat. I suppose my favorite is the brother who inherits the diamond business,the house ,and the girlfriend from his brother. seemed quite complex.Ive read all but a jockeys life.wreaked havoc on my job as i would start reading at bed time and not finish till about 4 am.Way worth it!!!!

A friend lent me a few Dick Francis books in 1986 while I was recovering from a broken hip as a resultof being thrown from our 18 hand (honest) thoroughbred. I have been a fan of Mr. Francis ever since.

The topic I have chosen is how the treatment of jockeys has changed over the decades, and the disparity between the compensation and protections that today's jockeys have (or not) relative to other professional athletes. The main character I believe he's the main character has 5 children and an estranged? wife at the beginning of the book and then a sixth is born to him at the end. Been reading Dick Francis ever since high school. Absolutely, without question, the best writer!!! I mark an excellent author by the number times I can reread their books...in Mr. Francis' case..He makes the top of the list! His male characters have the a core of strength and integrity (ie. Halley and Fielding) you wish you'd find in yourself or others around you! Looking forward to another great book!

Los Angeles, California Many years ago my father introduced me to the racing novels of Dick Francis. For this spring and summer, I've decided to read ALL of his books. I just finished FIELD OF THIRTEEN, a collection of his short stories. I heartily recommend it - especially as an introduction to his writing. What I love about his writing is his command of the English language, his well-defined characters and his plots. Without fail, he grabs my attention with the first paragraph. I once met him at a book signing in the the San Fernando Valley. The bookstore sold only mystery and detective books. He was seated at a large table with a red tablecloth (I think he was sitting on several pillows as he is a short man). His wife sat in a chair next to the table. He was very polite with alert eyes and a open manner. His wife wore a flowered dress and a pleasant smile. Both unmistakenly British but down to earth. I liked them immediately.

Two men, unknown to me, turned and questioned me a bit then urged me to try Dick Francis. Sounded like a movie star but I risked it. Hooked at first paragraph. Birmingham, UK I say my favourite is straight, but I haven't read them all yet. I was given Straight at my writing group last Christmas and Enjoyed it so much I've read a further four since then. I find the style varies and I think that I prefer the later novels. In order of preference I like Straight; Slayride, Bonecrack(because it was different) and Dead Cert. I wouldn't read another Sid Halley because I think he harped on too much about his amputated hand and Whiphand was too violent for my tastes.

Holland I start reading DF books when I read all my library books and the library its self was closed....I borrowed a book from my father (I was 12) and never stopped reading DF books....They are all so great !! When I read a book of DF and somebody is shouting at me, the book is so fantastic that I won't hear it !! A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to ask him some questions himself in a radioprogram and he was very, very friendly !! I've got all the Dutch books from him and now I am collecting the English books because most of the English books are hardcovered....

Greeley, CO USA DF has been my favorite writer since I began reading his books at about age 16. His concise, readable style and near-perfect heroes triumphing over desperate odds make a package hard to beat. I always enjoy his descriptions of memorable characters, high adventure, complex solutions and even physical pain, partaking in the exhiliratation from the safety of my home. And what fun it's been to be heroic and noble, if only vicariously. At age 49 it is still a treat to re-read any of his books.

SE USA I started reading DF's book while working in Saudia Arabia..We had a small libary of books donated by other employees..That was in 1988, I amazed by the others who read his books.. I've managed to collect about 34 of his 40 books.. I buy copies at used book stores and yard sales.. Even if I think I already have it..A month ago, I bought six books and only needed one of them. The others I gave to a freind to get him started. Dick's books are so relaxing to me, even though I don't really follow horse racing..Keep writing Dick, we need the great books...........
I have only just been introduced to Dick Francis with the omnibus edition published in 1990 of Straight and Banker. I am however greatly disappointed in the quality of typsetting. I found that there were numerous typographical errors, many appearing several time of one page.

Texas I first read your work in Readers Digest Condensed Books, and I was hooked. I'd like to know what happened with one of the characters that had befriended a lady that boarded horses (I think) - and she had a terminally ill daughter; he had befriended them both and had bought the girl a goldfish because she was too sick for a pet. I don't remember the name of the book, but the child was very ill and in the hospital and it didn't sound too promising. I'm sure there was another book that dealt with these characters; but I haven't read it. If anyone knows the name, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks for so much enjoyment!!!

Victoria Australia I have been a dick Francis fan for as long as I could remember! Myself one of Australia's leading Jockeys for many years with 1500 winners and 14,0000 race rides in seven different countries was forced to retire due to injury in september 2000, through boredom and a hard life I decided to write a book on my life and some wonderful true racing stories. The book is called "One ride to another" it will be published and on the book stores by the middle of August this yaer. Columbus, IN I owe so much to Dick Francis, it's not funny. It's amazing how much one person can change your life. I discovered his books in the late 70's, quit my job working for the government, and got a job on a horse farm. I've worked with and owned horses ever since. What's even more bizzare, I wrote a mystery set in the horse world, At Risk, and it was published last October. The sequel should be out early next year.

Pittsburgh, PA Decider I'm trying to find a Dick Francis book that I know I read years ago. It had a dotty old woman in it who turns out to be a poet. The woman's son-in-law is taking credit for her poems. The woman also continually shows up at her ex-husband's home. The main character ends up talking to someone in a monastery. I have most of Dick Francis's books and reread them frequently. I've looked through descriptions of the books I don't have and I guess the details I remember don't make it into the descriptions. My Grandfather passed away last week and I will be speaking at his funeral this week. Whenever I came to visit him, he was always reading a book, most of the time a Dick Francis book. He read every one at least three times. If anyone knows of a Francis quote or passage that would be appropriate to read at his funeral would you mind letting me know? wisconsin, u.s.a. I acquired my first DF book as a raffle prize and was none too excited about it - until I read it! That was 10 Lb. Penalty. Have read over 30 of his books in the five years since then. Have since discovered that both my father and ex-father-in-law are fans and have received many books from them both. What fun it is reading them...will definitely re-read them when I've read them all once. Have owned a horse, have been to several race tracks (both thoroughbred and harness), but mainly just enjoy the mysteries.

Livingston Texas I think I have all of them in paperback. I reread every year or so. They are always fresh. I read a commentary once that his heroes are so "competant". Perhaps that's what I like since I don't feel very competant most of the time.. I like the way he describes the female character's clothes but, they could use a little more depth.

Both books involve Sid Halley (?) and in the first he has a fall in a race and a horse tramples his left hand. In the second he has been employed as a security guard on a racecourse... Any ideas?!

Penrose, Colorado USA I can't name one over another as my favorite because each one is unique unto itself and just as engaging as the last. I have a difficult time putting one down until it is finished, causing me to be late and behind on other things to do once I start a new book or go back over one previously read. It is great finding a site where an email to the author will actually get to him. It would be nice to hear back from him but I will be satisfied knowing he will hear from me and know how much I enjoy and appreciate his works. I am so very glad for the chance to express myself to Mr. Francis as I have been an instand fan since 1984 thanks to my Grampa Charlie who was reading his works back then. Although Grampa is now gone, he is with me every time I pick up another book by Mr. Francis. My mum is fanatical about Dick Francis books, and I've just started reading them (and listening to the ones on tape) and I'm becoming a bit of a fan too. I was wondering if Dick was releasing any more new stories.. if so, WHEN? PLEASE let it be SOON!!!

Galway, Ireland I just have to say that as a horse fanatic and breeder, I find myself completelu under the spell of any Dick Francis book I read. There is such wit and intelligence in the writing of these books that it is impossible not to read on. My very first book was "Bolt" and I must admit I picked it up by accident in the bookshop but thank God for life's mishaps because it was one of the best mistakes I ever made! I'd better finish up now because I am aware that I'm going off on my own little tangent here! Keep up the good work, A faithful fan, JAYNE:)

Just out of interest the favourite quote on the page relating to "The Danger" - "We drove to Brighton and talked of many things for which there had never been peace enough before; of likes and dislikes, places, books, people; cabbages and kings." The character is paraphrasing the poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter" from Alice in Wonderland Just thought it might be of interest :)

Gyland, Norway I`v been hooked on Dick Francis` books since the first was translated to norwegian long ago. I was born with horses in my blood, have had horses for 30 years (trotters)and been racing them. Best novel is hard to tell, but it had to be one of the first I ever read. It made a great impression to discover his authorship and I have about 35 books, some both in norwegian and english and others in either one or the other. Wish I could have seen him race, but that I never did.

All! Not fair to ask which is my favorite - I have read all of the books several times over! The mysteries are well-done and surprising, and he makes characters seems real, warts and all. I also enjoy how he works his research into the story without being didactic. I learned more about wines from reading "Proof" than from any article, for example. Thank you, Mr Francis, for sharing your talent.

I have always read the current bestsellers by DF, but recently visitied the public library to read the older titles. I have fallen in love all over again with DF's heros - and been entertained all summer long as I've worked my way through the 3 marvelous shelves of offerings. Depth, integrity, pace, intelligence...Many thanks, DF!!!!!!

Centurion, South Africa I fell in love with Kit Fielding and Syd Halley. They are my favourite heroes regardless of author and I would very much like either or both of them to appear in more books. Dick Francis describes racing so well that anyone with an affinity for horses absolutely ravishes his books. Please, don't ever stop writing!

A friend introduced me to Dick Francis a few years ago and what has delighted me most is his style of writing such as "he crunched down the drive" (I can hear him walking). I love the characters that seem so unassuming and yet are brilliant. Someone once asked me who I'd like to have dinner with if I could choose anyone in the world and I said, "Dick Francis." I'd like to know if he talks the way he writes! I hope you never stop writing, even if you live to be 150 years old!!!!! I DO own a few books that I re-read - can't determine which is the favorite because they all are!

My grandmother got me interested in Dick Francis about 6 years ago. She has since passed away and she left me all of her books. What a treasured collection! I nearly have them all and once I start reading one I can't do anything else until I finish it. I particularly like the books that are sort of series. I always hate to finish a book because I want to know what happens next. The series help with that. Thanks Alissa Mize
